An arepa is a round Venezuelan cornmeal cake. The dough is formed into a disc and cooked until the outside is crisp and golden and the inside is soft, then split open and stuffed.
How arepas are eaten
Arepas can be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Classic fillings include shredded beef (carne mechada), shredded chicken, roasted pork, black beans and cheese, with avocado often added.
